Nurburgring, Germany May 1974

This 1974 photograph by Rainer Schlegelmilch captures Hans Joachim flying in his powerful BMW 3.5 CSL.

Race tracks weren’t always perfectly sealed, run off area-equipped, airtight 3.5 mile circuits. Back in the old days, complex and often dangerous open roads often became the basis for iconic tracks like the Targa Florio, Hockenheim and Spa, for instance. But perhaps most impressive is Germany’s Nurburgring track, nicknamed “The Green Hell” by F1 champion Sir Jackie Stewart.
